OK, I spent an evening systematically trying a couple of the various combinationsof drivers and options that I found when searching. This was for a 600E-2645-4AU.

For the archives, this loaded:
cs4232 io=0x530 irq=5 dma=1 dma2=0 mpuio=0x330 mpuirq=5 synthirq=-1 synthio=-1

As found in http://mailman.linux-thinkpad.org/pipermail/linux-thinkpad/2003-March/010402.html

Sound input appears to work... at least it doesn't give me DMA errors anymore. Haven't tried using the MPU yet.
