ok... you gave me the right command... I also had to specify type...
eg.   fdformat /dev/fd0u1440

otherwise I got some error  file system unknown? or disk unknown type... 
somthing like that...

Mke2fs only puts an ext2 filesystem on the floppy disk.  It doesn't do
a low-level format of the floppy disk.  In order to do this, use the
fdformat program.
