Well, you bought proprietary software and proprietary data from Garmin,
but there is some Java app available that can apparently download the maps.

For mapping-type stuff, you should give grass a try, and there is also
GMT and quite a few other pieces. grass-5.0.0 is available on Mandrake
9.0 and later (in contrib):

Grass is more of a GIS than a mapping app, and is capable of replacing
things like ArcInfo etc.

Getting data off some of the Garmin units is also not as easy as it
could be ... yet, but some progress has been made with gpspoint2, I just
haven't got it's GUI frontend to compile yet.
