IIRC, you have to enable CONFIG_VT and CONFIG_VT_CONSOLE.

By the way, ACPI is broken for me with this configuration. The
kernel ooopses very early in the ACPI initialization functions (booting
with acpi=off is okay). Using the default config also crashes in ACPI
(20030619).
