Try this:

There is a script there called suspend_AND_resume - which may help you. 
The fix we found was basically the following:

Change to VT1
kill -STOP the X server
apm -s
kill -CONT the X server
Sort out sound


What this means is that X can't mess up while entering/leaving suspend 
because it isn't running at the time. I had exactly your symptoms - 
namely very unreliable resume.
