If you're trying to run a dumb terminal on a serial line to your thinkpad,
you don't need telnet or ssh.  Just run agetty (or something similar) on
the serial port, and run minicom (or a similar program) on the other
machine.

man agetty
man inittab

... might be of some use to you if you're trying to set up the machine
you're trying to get into.
