[ltp] Dual-headed R40?

I have XFree86 working great on my R40 even for dual-headed stuff with the
built-in LCD and an external CRT. Except, the dual-headed stuff only works
fine if I plug the monitor in /after/ booting the R40. Otherwise, X won't
appear on the LCD at all. What's going on? Can anyone help?

Maybe there's now a known solution?
