Thanks for the suggestions.
1. I will try configuring pcmcia as part of the kernel as Dan Sawyer suggests.
2. Greg Meyer asks if there is anything in the pcmcia slot when I have the
problem. I have the problem whether or not my wireless card is in the slot.
3. honey@gneek.com pointed to a bug report for redhat 7.3 in July 2002:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=67814
This seems very similar to my booting problem. I noticed when reading the
bug report that there is a comment that this still happens with redhat 9.
No one commented on getting into interactive mode on boot. This seemed exactly
what I needed to investigate this booting issue but when typing "I" at the
brief prompt I have only very rarely been able to get into interactive boot
mode. Is this a known problem? I suspect this may be due to there being only
short time window to type "I".
