I decided to just try it - I added the vga= line to my grub config and 
rebooted.
Works really well - the penguin bitmap was an added bonus!

So now I have a 128 column console :-)

I just wanted to thank people for their help - maybe I should start 
documenting...

Now to tackle important stuff like MP3's :-)
