You have to create the /dev/thinkpad dir and include the following lines
to /etc/modules.conf
keep
path[thinkpad]=/lib/modules/`uname -r`/thinkpad
options thinkpad enable_smapi=1 enable_superio=1 enable_rtcmosram=1
enable_thinkpadpm=1 alias char-major-10-170 thinkpad
alias /dev/thinkpad thinkpad

i have compile the thinkpad 4.8 and tpctl 4.8 from sourceforge on a
redhat 9 with gcc 3.3.1 and 2.4.22 and it works for me
