no idea. i actually took the disk out and put it into another machine, and
STILL get the wrong geometry.
my t40 came with a FUJITSU MHS2030AT, which shows up as a 52502322*512
byte drive. this doesn't make sense for any definition of 30GB. (even if
you take GB==10^9 bytes, rather than 2^30)
so i think the drive itself is configured to lie about its geometry, to
hide the recovery area from the OS.
