Thanks for the input. I did try cardctl insert, no luck. I did check out your post on sourceforge and you appear to be using an "ac" kernel which, after investigation patches pcmcia for the TI 1510. The "vanilla" 2.4.21 that I have doesn't have this support. I did also find that pcmcia-cs v 3.2.5 does support the chip so now I have 2 choices, use pcmcia-cs (v3.2.5, had tried my distro version, v3.2.2, no dice), or apply the "ac" patch to my kernel, an recompile. I would assume that the same issue that you have reported will remain (at least for the kernel with "ac" patch), but that's another story...
Choice is good, I think I will have a go with pcmcia-cs first (v3.2.5) and see if this also fixes the cardmgr issue. My distro support (libranet) will be providing me with a packaged version of the pcmcia-cs (v3.2.5).
