I just got my DVD/CD-RW working on my R40 (I suspect the 
platform is irrelevant).  

I have this symbolic link:
/dev/dvd -> /dev/cdrom

And my fstab has this:

/dev/cdrom              /mnt/cdrom              udf,iso9660
