I've had good experience with Red Hat on Thinkpad 600 machines. Red Hat 9
can be installed by simply booting from the install CDs, and should be
able to fit on your 4GB drive. If you have the internal modem and want it
to work, you'll need to download an extra driver. You also have to set
the sound up manually (see the archives of this list), but everything else
should work out of the box.
If you have a fast network conenction, you can probably download ISOs from
ftp.freshrpms.net.
You can also try linux by using
Knoppix - see http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-old.html
Knoppix can boot directly from your CD. It's an easy way to try Linux.
And of course, there's always SuSE: http://www.suse.de I can't say how
well it works on Thinkpads simply because I've never tried it on a
Thinkpad.
Of course, other Linux distributions will work fine on thinkpads as well,
but might not be as easy to get installed as the two above
(non-Knoppix Debian, Slackware, etc.)
