Is your BIOS set to "fast boot" or not? This is basically the "OS
supports PNP" option you find on desktop BIOS's, which should be off
(unless you're running a 2.6 kernel), so on the Thinkpads, should not be
set to fast boot. In my case, switching fast boot off meant everything
was detected on Mandrake 9.1.

  Knoppix also works on

Other considerations are what software you will be using. Some
distributions specialise in certain aspects. My choice, Mandrake, has a
lot of contributed software, including support for some
Thinkpad-specific features (tpb is in contrib, the Thinkpad drivers are
in the update kernel for 9.1, tpctl will be in 9.2, tp4utils will be in
9.2 contrib), have a selection of kernels (9.1 has the stock kernel,
plus the multimedia kernel in contrib, and a 3rd kernel with some
additional feature patches), and includes a lot of software that I find
useful (which in some cases can otherwise only be found in Debian
unstable, and in others not at all).

If you need to run commercial sofware however, it may be less effort to
run Redhat, since most 3rd-party vendors compile for Redhat (although
you can normally get the applications to run without too much effort on
other distros).
