When you plug-in the drive, syslog should show you something like (my syslog):

This means that there is one partition on that drive and you can mount it the way you pointed out (assuming the filesystem on it is actually vfat).

If you have multiple partitions (3 for example) on the disc you will read:
Sep 22 11:16:07 stella /dev/scsi/host0/bus0/target0/lun0: p1 p2 p3
