Are you using KDE or Gnome or no graphics at all? Try all three and let us know.
I have a R40 running Mandrake with APM, kernel 2.6.3. Gnome suspends and resumes without any problems (even overnight). However, with KDE I have some strange problems when resuming (looped restarts of KDE). Since I prefer KDE, what I have to do is to log-out from KDE to the Window (or Display) Manager, and then I hit Fn+F4 to suspend, and I can log back on into KDE.
I suspect that something is going on with KDE (3.2) and it's interaction with the graphics...
