But you can leave your X session alone and start another by pressing 
Ctrl-Alt-F1 to get to the text login, logging in and typing
	startx -- :1
which will start up X as if you had logged in via GDM or whatever 
display manager you have.  You can switch between the two sessions with 
Ctrl-Alt-F7 (the first graphical login, :0) and Ctrl-Alt-F8 (the second, 
:1).

Alternately, if this is too much technobabble for the rest of your 
family, you could initially log in via :1 and leave GDM as is for 
everyone else, then they don't have to do anything differently.
