Simply add the following lines to /etc/modules:
usbmouse
mousedev
When you boot with the mouse plugged in, hotplug automatically loads
those modules. When you boot without the mouse, XFree86 fails to open
/dev/input/mice because the driver is not present.
Just in case I missed something, my /etc/modules also contain
uhci
input
usbkbd
keybdev
usbmouse
mousedev
