While I was installing Linux, I noticed that an older version of GNU
parted (from Knoppix 3.1, I believe) let me see the pre-desktop area
as free space, while a newer one didn't show it at all (just showed a
smaller total disk size).  I would assume that the older version would
have let me use that free space, but I am waiting for the IBM recovery
CDs before trying.
