Experience echoed here. On my T40 with Xorg drivers (from Fedora
Core 2) after a bit of a fight I had ACPI working perfectly for
suspend-to-ram (S3) and suspend-to-disk (S4, using swsusp). I just
tried the ATI fglrx 3.11.1 drivers, what a disaster - neither sleep
state work, resulting in a complete hang, and switching to console
and back breaks the display - back-lit and blank.

I haven't used the ATI RPMs before, not being a great 3D user - and
what a poor experience it is. Left lots of rubbish around after an
rpm -e, and seemed to do a "rm *fglrx* in /usr/X11R6/lib/, removing
another version of the libGL library I'd saved with this in the name.
Had to eventually resort to various rpm -qV's and find's to make sure
I'd cleaned up properly after removal.
Won't be trying that again soon - I only wanted to play tuxracer :)
