As a user, I can recommend Boris's ibm-acpi module strongly after
trying it - it enables me to get back control of the following keys
in ACPI on my T40:

Fn-F3,F4,F5,F7,F8,F9,F12

As Boris said, you can elect for it to control or leave alone each of
these keys via a clever mask (I leave Fn-F5 for bluetooth untouched)
- but it means I can suddenly tie ACPI handlers like suspend-to-disk
to Fn-F12 while having Fn-F4 suspend-to-ram - just like in APM.
Leaves me keys like Fn-F9 to toggle my wireless up and down.

So highly recommended from a T40/ACPI user!
