No, the HD I/O errors were because the partition table was malformed, in
order to hide the pre-desktop area. I eliminated the errors by having the
last primary partition (hda4) end early (where it should, according to the
partition table). The unmodified (from kernel.org) kernels couldn't deal
with an "invalid" partition, while SuSE's kernel (and installer) had no
problem with it. One of these days I'll recreate the partition table, but
I'm hesitant to do that without a backup.

Hmm, is reiserfs built into the kernel or modularized? Maybe you should
try a different filesystem.

Mine wasn't acting up in that manner.

Unix is user-friendly; it's just picky
about who it makes friends with.
