There's been talk or merging the drm and fb drivers in the kernel and
then running X on top of that rather than doing everything from
userspace like xfree86/xorg does now.  You could of course fall back
to userspace if your OS didn't have the kernel interface.  See the
dri-devel and xorg mailing list archives for more.
