I think that ACPI permits the listing and the setup of ACPI aware
devices on your laptop, for example the graphic card, the wired
ethernet card and the wifi card. When such devices can work in
different power modes, you can lower your power consumption via ACPI
requests to the devices. Besides, ACPI permits finer things than APM
in respect to shutdown/sleep/hibernate, but I think one can be
perfectly happy wuth sole APM support!
