Some more good news, the open-source driver in xorg 6.7 gives me 1150fps in 
glxgears.  Not the numbers you got from the ATI drivers, but much better than 
the 500fps I used to get with XFree 4.3 and good enough for my needs.  It 
will prevent me from having to monkey with them anymore.
