I always use growisofs for burning DVDs.  You need to have an ISO file
already prepared, but you can do that with mkisofs or XCDRoast which has
a nice GUI.  Then just type:
growisofs -dvd-compat -speed=4 -Z /dev/cd0=image.iso

Substitute your write speed, dvd device and full path to the .iso file.
This always works for me.
