Actually, I did have that working using Clone mode.  However, what I'm
trying to do is get different resolutions on the LCD and CRT, and be
able to change them on the fly without restarting X.

Meta Modes should do the trick, but is not working.  I'll have to
forward my logs next week, as I am in Japan this week.
