| Off-topic: people talk here about the reliability of Thinkpads; am I
| the only one whose case is cracked? Basically under where my palms would
| rest (but don't -- no jokes please about "don't press so hard"). I end up
| supergluing it once a month or so.

I have used IBM laptops for the past 8+ years, from old 468 systems,
through a 770ED to an A31p and now to a R50p and they have all held up
remarkably well. My laptops have always been very heavily used, travel
on airplanes and in cars with me, have been used literally out in the
field, exposed to dust, dirt, and sand, have withstood the probing
fingers of my now four year old son, and have generally been used and
abused very heavily.

I have never had an issue with the case, display, or anything else. My
son did manage to pick off one of my arrow keys on both the previous and
current laptop. I lived with it on the previous as I couldn't find the
interconnecting rigging to help the key stay in place. On the current
machine I ordered a new keyboard under a warranty claim.

On the 770ED, I did use it so much the black paint was coming off of the
black plastic, also in the areas you mentioned, under my palms and along
the edge of my hands. It was more pronounced on the right side where I
would often keep my hand to use IBM's wonderful trackpoint [ see
previous discussions ].

Other than needing to constantly keep my screen clean, I have been a
very happy ThinkPad user for quite some time. By the by, all of those
systems, even the old 486's, ran Linux of some form at some time.
