This is not generally true; it seems to depend on which model (and maybe
revision) you have. My T42p does as well on acpi suspend as it does on
apm. A friends T40 stays warm on acpi suspend and sleeps well only on
apm. So I'd recommend you take a shot and look what happens.

Nope. Try ACPI first and if it uses up 5-10% of your battery (depending
on model) per day in suspend youre lucky and you should proceed with
ACPI.
