[ltp] mplayer on t40p

I've tried to get this working forever and I have had zero luck. 
Installed mplayer from source, tried playing an avi|mpeg|dvd|anything
, sound works but the video is stretched out in the top of the screen
barely visible.  Once the video is done, the lines stay there, I have
to move a window over the lines to remove them.

1400 x 1050 resolution
mplayer 1.0pre4-3.3.4
debian testing/unstable 
XF86 4.3.0.1
grub:
kopt=root=/dev/hda1 ro vga=835 acpi=off video=vesafb:mtrr,ywrap

Anyone have luck getting this to work?
