Regarding the problem with the WiFi card: do you know what the beacon
interval on the base station is?

I had set my base station to beacon less frequently (every 500ms rather
than 10ms). This caused problems, because the driver will assume that the
base station is gone if the card does not hear a beacon for 1 second.
(With the higher frequency of beacons, the card would have to drop ten
frames, rather than two, before the driver decides to disassociate.)
