I think I have seen similar behaviour (doesn't work at boot, but second
try works), especially with the sound card, but didn't investigate that
further...
Two thoughts:
a) Re-check the aliases in /lib/modules/modprobe.conf.
b) Try to insert a short sleep after the module is inserted. You can
do this with the new "install" directive in modprobe.conf. I once had
the suspicion that the modprobe command returns before the module is
fully setup...
