aaaahhhhmmm.
glxgears takes 25% but
in fullscreen only 3%!?

What's going wrong?
XFree86-4.3 and glxinfo says:

OpenGL vendor string: Tungsten Graphics, Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Radeon 20020611 AGP 4x x86/MMX/SSE TCL
OpenGL version string: 1.2 Mesa 4.0.4
