Hi folks,
I have seen a lot of discussion for enabling 3D/GL with Thinkpads and
ATI cards around. I just want to add a new point to all this:
Why don't you use the "radeon" driver included in X and the latest
kernels (2.4.x and 2.6.x)?! I have used this with RedHat 9 and Fedora 2 now.
Now the facts:
I'm running glxgears with default windows size at around 1480 FPS!!! If
I compare to:
http://xoomer.virgilio.it/flavio.stanchina/debian/fglrx-installer.html
(section: 7. Working setups)
The difference is amazing.
Perhaps I'm missing something or does the radeon driver only work with
my card? But I think even the setup with all the ATI driver is not very
complicated, so why not use the standard?!
Suspending is working well with APM. ACPI is disabled due to problems
with USB.
I have attached my latest xorg.conf (XF86Config). The importants
settings for my kernel 2.6.6.x are the following:
CONFIG_DRM_RADEON=m
CONFIG_FB_RADEON_OLD=m
CONFIG_FB_RADEON=m
CONFIG_FB_RADEON_I2C=y
(Look for Device Drivers->Graphics support->ATI*)
Best regards
Thomas

# To disable the XKEYBOARD extension, uncomment XkbDisable.
# Option "XkbDisable"
# To customise the XKB settings to suit your keyboard, modify the

# keyboard, you will probably want to use:
# Option "XkbModel" "pc102"
# If you have a US Microsoft Natural keyboard, you can use:
# Option "XkbModel" "microsoft"
#
# Then to change the language, change the Layout setting.
# For example, a german layout can be obtained with:
# Option "XkbLayout" "de"

# Option "XkbLayout" "de"
# Option "XkbVariant" "nodeadkeys"
#
# If you'd like to switch the positions of your capslock and

# Option "XkbOptions" "ctrl:swapcaps"
# Or if you just want both to be control, use:
# Option "XkbOptions" "ctrl:nocaps"
