My understanding is that lower rpm HDDs could potentially last longer
than the higher rpm ones.

So you might want to look for a 4200rpm disk (not the 5400 one as you
currently have or the 7200 ones that are now available)

I have a 4200RPM/80G HDD in my T40 - keeping my fingers crosed. I
recently got an external USB hdd for backups.
