Try disabling whatever is constantly polling APM---probably some type of
status-tray / battery monitor Applet.
The PS/2, keyboard scan, power management and the like are all appear to be
handled by a single Super I/O chip which seems to go to pot if the APM is
being queried at that moment and something like mouse/keyboard movement
occurs.
These symptoms have come up on the Linux/R31 list a couple of times;
