Well, I went into the BIOS upon start up and found
that the serial port was disabled. Changed that
quickly and got all excited that I could finally dial
out the ttyS0 serial port though the external modem
after three weeks of frustration. But alas, my
frustration continues.

With the serial port now enabled, both the network
device manager and minicom still fail to recognize the
modem on the serial port. Entering manual commands
through minicom resulted in no detection of the modem
(yes, the modem was on and yes the modem work on other
non-thinkpad systems).

Suspecting that the serial port might be bad on the
ultrabay, I swapped out my ultrabay for a loaner
ultrabay obtained from work who a known working serial
port. Booted up, still no recognition or response
from the serial port.

I am beginning to think that I made a big mistake
buying the thinkpad for Linux use - I just don't have
the time in the evening to fiddle - who does?

Help! Please!
