[ltp] pre-installation advice?

Hi,
I recently installed dual boot XP and SuSE 9.1 personal on my T40. The
thread 'GRUB Geom error' in the archives describes my initial experiences
(sounds promising, huh?).
The system works ok now, but the partition table is a bit of a mess. In
particular, the recovery partition seemed to cause some problems during
installation. Suse still won't use the last chunk of my HD (only 30 mb, but
still..).
As a complete newbie, I am not really in a position to give advice, but for
what it's worth, this is how I would probably do the thing:
Obtain recovery CDs from IBM
Boot XP, make sure everything is working.
Make sure everything is updated (XP, BIOS. I am just guessing that the less
you have messed with the system, the more likely the automated update-tools
are to succeed. I could be wrong)
Disable recovery-partition.
Resize NTFS, create new partitions
Install Suse, keep an eye on how the partitions are being used.
Apart from the HD geometry thing, Suse seems to work fine. Would have
preferred pro instead of personal, though.
