In which way does it lock up? I was experiencing problems with my T40p
using APM (not with ACPI, though):

After a while (during inactivity, when I was watching a movie or when
I left the machine running - on AC as well as on battery), the screen
would blank, and the fan would speed up a bit and stay at that
speed. I couldn't ping the machine any more, and there was no way I
could wake it up from that - even the power button stopped working
when it did that; I had to remove the AC and take out the battery to
reboot the notebook.

Never found out what was causing these problems. Is that what you're
seeing?

My solution to these lock-ups was to use ACPI and swsusp2 as a
replacement for the broken ACPI suspend-to-RAM modes. Don't know if
that's helping you, but it worked for me (-:

Good luck,
