The X40 has integrated intel video, only one memslot (+ 256 or 512
soldered on), gigabit ethernet, and weighs less; 2.7lbs or 3.2lbs
depending on battery.

The X31 has a faster processor and separate video mem.

I found that knoppix 3.4 HD install works well on the X40, but there are a
few little things that can be annoying.  I like the X40 and it can be had
for something like $1500.
