The 2.4.19 kernel is quite old - most people recommend at least 2.4.22 
or later. When I tried a 2.4.18 kernel on my T40 (eepro100 ether card) 
it couldn't recognise it, but 2.4.22 and later found it with no 
problems. I suspect the same is happening for you.
