Not sure by the idea that "the fan never shutting off".

I'm using suse (while i'm still trying to get my debian work) and the fan 
just went off after I did the shutdown command.

It is practically impossible to teach good programming style to
students that have had prior exposure to BASIC: as potential
programmers they are mentally mutilated beyond hope of
regeneration.
