"Well this sounds great! My housemate has a plain P4 2.4GHz Toshiba and
it seems a bit sluggish. If these Pentium Ms are much better and lower
power, why don't they use them in desktop machines?"

That's what I've been wondering, I think I even heard that they work =
with any old PIII chipset. However, Intel wants to market its insane P4 =
design as being the ultimate in desktop, since they have been pumping so =
much money into it. P4 eventually became okay, but Prescott is truly an =
awful design, but that is a flame not appropriate for this list :) I've =
not been fond of Intel recently, but I think that the Pentium M was a =
step in the right direction. It actually seems as though they are =
trying to make their desktop chips good for processing multiple data =
streams simultaneously, as evidenced by the addition of SSE/SSE2/SSE3, =
hyperthreading, high clock rates, long pipelines, etc. I think that a =
better direction would be something low-power and efficient. Heck, the =
Prescotts require heavy cooling and have more strict case requirements =
because of heat.

PS. I want to say to everybody that I'm sorry about the format of my =
posts (top-posting, poorly formatted replies, etc). Unfortunately, my =
family moved and we no longer have an ISP. So in the meantime, I have to =
use my school's email address and "webmail" application. Sorry!
