[ltp] at boot X gives mouse error, startx works fine

After a recent update of Debian/Testing (updating to KDE 3.2, and some other stuff) X stopped starting after boot. In /etc/rc2.d/ I have the S99kdm file to start X (right?). /var/log/XFree86.0.log gives:

And I get kicked to a regular shell login. After login, I can do startx, and X starts just fine. The equivalent /var/log/XFree86.0.log then looks like:

Apparently, X won't start during boot because it can't set up the mouse. I'm not sure why. Any help here is appreciated.
