hi,
thanks for the advice! i tried setting the CloneMode option in the
device section and then changing the resolution with xvidtune
-next/-prev and ctrl-alt-kp +-, and finally xrandr -s n. The latter gave
the best results, but it still doesn't come out quite right and the
window edges fall outside the display. I also have the mode line with
the resolution of the external monitor included in the Screen section
(Modes "1400x1050" "1280x1024"...). 
Hmm, bit of a mess. :)
