It may mean, at least on some Thinkpads, that it's possible to get the
thing to make noise using the plain old Soundblaster driver if nothing
else works.

That's true on the 701 and 770 Thinkpads, at least.  (You don't get stereo
sound on a 770 doing this, but it will play sounds.)
