I just wanted to add my experiences:

- T40p = Radeon 9000, ATI 3.7.6 binary driver.
- Debian sarge, XFree86 Version 4.3.0.1 (Debian 4.3.0.dfsg.1-1)
- APM

Suspend-to-RAM works like a charm without any problems.

(I unload the USB stuff before suspend and insert it after resume,
before this I also had hard lockups, e.g. when using an external USB
keyboard)

After wakeup, the screen returns garbled but returns to normal after a
few moments (pretty much the time, during which I reload the USB mods)!

A collegue of mine has the same hardware, but uses gnome (I use KDE).
His GUI does not redraw the screen after resume (so it stays garbled)
but the laptop wakes up stable. At the moment, he made himself a button
that sends a command to X to redraw the screen and everythings fine
again.

Another difference between our two TPs is the BIOS and embedded
controller BIOS version!

There has been some mentioning of "garbage screen" and "screen
corruption" in the changelog, see
http://www-3.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-52287
Not really directly related (e.g. one change mentions DOS), but it might
(!) have something to do with it.

So, probably (!), the BIOS version of your TP does also play a role.

But please do carefully consider an upgrade. Not everyone is happy with
the newest versions and we all know that disaster could strike anyone
during a flash update... And probably, it won't even help!
