Followup.

Downloaded a "Drive Fitness Test" from the Hitachi site
(http://www.hitachigst.com) that stress-tests hard drives with "Smart
Drive" capabilities. Ran four hours worth of tests on it. It showed a few bad
sectors -- nothing unusual for a used drive -- but otherwise okay.

The drive runs hot and whines pretty loud, but it looks like a keeper.
