[ltp] weird keyboard behavior with T41p and showkey on xorg

Hi,

when i execute showkey in an su'd xterm without parameters, it
immediately starts getting keycodes - or at least it prints empty
newlines all the time. I can then close the term and open one again with
the effect continuing within it. The moment i press any key then the
effect stops.

I also realised a similar effect on issuing a shutdown from an xterm.

Any ideas what might cause this?
